The overall goal of our CEMApop Peer Support program is in the process of establishing a support network for members across the state of Colorado who can assist individuals with developing and maintaining resiliency and serve as an early warning system for potential problem using appropriate referrals either within or outside of the traditional department/agency.
Although peer support programs can vary in their function from critical incident response to peer counseling, members of our peer support team will receive specialized training in a variety of areas including stress and anger management, trauma prevention and intervention, responding to mass casualties, understanding mental illness, substance abuse, family survival tactics, managing relational stressors, suicide prevention and intervention, and general supportive skills. Our peer support team will offer guidance to colleagues using strategies that can assist with maintaining general mental wellness, while also educating them about adaptive coping skills and symptoms of stress.
